<h2>Summary of Expertise</h2>
<h3>Commercial Experience</h3>
I have been involved in the software industry for over 9 years. I have progressed from a Programmers position to Technical Lead, with responsibilities for technical leadership and architecture. I have particular experience with consulting firms and the financial industry - both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
<h3>Architectural Design</h3>
I am confident in designing the architecture for J2EE based systems, and their interaction with non-Java technologies. My experience with the diverse technologies at both Westpac and The National Bank, as well as the remote-access challenges provided on the Media-Tracker project give me a sound architectural background. I have been designing project architectures for 4 years.
Leadership
As the Technical Lead, I am responsible for managing the Java Developers in my team. This includes allocation of work, monitoring and reviewing progress, and overseeing the resolution of any issues that arise.
I also work with the Lead Business Analyst and the Project Manager in reviewing and clarifying business requirements and exploring the most effective ways to meet the needs of the business.
<h3>Development Techniques</h3>
I have experience with the iterative development techniques of the Rational Unified Process, and the prescribed documentation and processes. This includes the use of various UML modelling tools such as Rational Rose, Together and Visio.
I also have experience with Agile development techniques such as Feature Driven Development, and Extreme Programming.
<h3>Java / J2EE / Application Servers</h3>
I have 8 years of experience with the Java language. I have 6 years of experience with the J2EE specification (EJB, JSP, XML, JMS, JDBC, Servlets). Most of this experience has been based around the development of large-scale systems running on application servers. The systems I have developed are used by thousands of in-house users, and considerably more for those deployed on the Internet.
I have developed with application servers such as Websphere, Weblogic, Tomcat, and JRun.
<h3>Database</h3>
I have 6 years of experience with the Oracle database, and 4 years with DB2. I have proven skills in designing database models that scale up to very large systems. I have also used Microsoft SQL Server. Standard database design skills apply to most commercial databases, and I am comfortable using any of them.
<h3>Web / Internet / Web Services</h3>
I have 8 years of experience with HTML and JavaScript. I use standards such as CSS and DHTML. I am competent using text-based editors for HTML.
I have detailed knowledge of the low-level Internet protocols of TCP and HTTP. I have used these to implement various web services – even over the unreliable “Public Internetâ€Â.
<h3>Visual Basic</h3>
I have 2 years of experience with Visual Basic – both with Windows clients, and on the MTS server with DCOM. More recently, with a VB / Weblogic solution using Web Services.
<h3>Operating Systems</h3>
I have used various Unix based operating systems throughout my career. These include Solaris, AIX and various forms of Linux. I can develop simple shell scripts, and perform installation and rudimentary administration of Linux.
I am highly skilled with running and administering all forms of Microsoft Windows.
