Designer looking for a Programmer for long-term partnership

  hi all!
  
  i need help with my own photography exhibition/ecommerce site, a simpler WP site for a local importing business, and an ecommerce site for a local greenhouse (all of these are asap, but i'll also need someone beyond!).
  
  i've been a web designer and project manager for the better part of 10 years, but it's taken me until this year to commit myself to wordpress, which i don't have as much experience in.

  at present, i'm stuck at choosing a theme.
  
  i'm not sure if i should:
  * go for one of the few most popular/well supported at themeforest and customize their many layouts
  * use a $100/yr theme made for selling photography from graphpaperpress.com
  * stick to and customize a basic masonry-style WP portfolio theme
  * add ecommerce and CSS customizations to my tumblr or to the bosky theme i experimented with at nolaerrday.com
  
  aside from seeing which themes are the most supported, how does one intelligently decide which to use? buying them all, trying them out, and returning the ones that aren't well-suited for the project? on the ecommerce end, should i use the sellmedia plugin or woocommerce?
  
  i'm also using inexpensive shared hosting for my handful of past small biz clients and myself and wondering if i can spend a little more to make this one run faster. the more thoughtfully you can address either of these issues, the more inclined i'll be to work with you!
