I've been using Adobe Flex for almost 3
years now. Been using Adobe Flash for
about 5 years. Photoshop is an extension
of my hands. I can do anything and do it
fast. I'm moving on to more challenging
projects like improving my Unix Shell
Scripting, Using the X Windows System,
creating an incredible Fvwm desktop and
fvwm2rc config file. Working to
incorporate Adobe Flex and Ruby on
Rails, so I can do both Front End
development and Back end development by
myself. I'm practically a one man
Interactive Web Design and Advertising
Agency.
Where do I stand with Flex and Action
Script 3.0? My abilities are solid with
Adobe Flex Builder and the Adobe FlexSDK
3. I can use mxmlc or java Ant to
compile SWF’s from the command line and
the Flash IDE. I can build SWF’s without
mxml in all Action Script 3 or a
combination of both. I’ve used design
patterns and have build my library of
code including design patterns and OOP
idioms that relate to Action Script 3
and Flex. I’ve explored animation driven
by code and physics formulas, not
tweening as in Flash. I’ve also explored
3D coding as well. I have worked with
video in Flex Builder and just using
Action Script 3.0 to create video
classes using OOP. I use URLLoader to
pass xml content into a SWF as well as
Flex’s HTTPRequest and Web Services. I
prefer to work with Flex and Action
Script 3.0 on a low technical level
because the higher level with Flex
driven components can be expensive in
terms of system resources. It’s much
more efficient to code custom Action
Script classes and bring them into the
application, so that they don’t utilize
unneeded functionality that makes the
component heavy and slow taking up
resources like memory and bandwidth. I
can work with the Free Adobe FlexSDK if
needed. I can use a computer with a Unix
command line and free Unix text editors
like Vi, Vim, or Emacs to compile SWFs
with mxmlc at the command line. This
saves a company from having to purchase
a licensed copy of Adobe Flex Builder. I
do prefer Adobe Flex Builder only for
it’s code completions and the ability to
customize the IDE environment. Some code
if difficult to write locally without
either the Flash IDE or Flex Builder
because Adobe has placed restrictions on
SWF local access capability. This is
circumvented by placing SWFs on a
development server. I have been
programming Action Script 3.0 for two
and a half years. I have programmed
Action Script since 2004. I also have
the ability to code Objective-C for the
Cocoa environment and the IPhone
environment, but I have nowhere near the
familiarity and understanding that I do
with Action Script 3.0 in Flash or Flex.
