I have been doing Web Development since the Web's infancy, first as a hobby and now for a living. I can do many things but I consider myself an expert at the technologies I've listed above. I am a certified expert at Experts Exchange.
What I'm looking for:
Just about anything really, but see what I'm not looking for below. I'm willing to take on jobs large or small. I can create that one script that you need or do the entire site. I am looking to work in those technologies that I’ve listed above. Need something else I'm not your man.
To start off I'm looking for jobs that I can build a portfolio with. Because of this I'm willing to work inexpensively for the ability to point to the work and say "I did this". If you have a small budget, no problem. Contact me and I'm sure we can work something out.
Mainly I'm looking to be someone you can outsource projects to, or even parts of projects, and trust that what you get back is what you asked for.
What I'm not looking for:
I am not a designer, though I can do design when needed to add elements to a site or to tweak a design, perhaps add some element that the designer may have overlooked. I have many years of experience using PhotoShop, I've been using it since version 2. Like I said, I'm not advertising myself as a designer, but I can do design work when I need to.
I do not like frameworks or implementing open source solutions. So, no JQuery or MooTools and most definitely no Joomla or osCommerce. If you're looking for someone to do these things look elsewhere. Not that I couldn't if pressed, but I have strong opinions about these things. Basically, I like extremely clean, organized and well documented code. I do not like playing in spaghetti when I code and I do not want to spend weeks getting proficient at some framework or poorly designed application only to do it again with another framework or application the next time. I've taken the time to learn my skills well and I feel that these other tools (among other) are made for those that are looking for an easy way out (and not really interested in actually finding one.) In most cases I can likely build the entire project from scratch faster without using these tools. For some excellent articles that state my view on open source and frameworks see this, this and this.
Portfolio:
Unfortunately, I cannot publish publicly the work that I have been involved in to this point. (You can help me change this) Most of the work I've done is for my full time employer and they take credit for the work. While they have no problem with me doing side work, they do have a problem with me using the work I did for them as examples, at least publicly. However, if you contact me and let me know what types of things you are looking for I can and will send you examples and links to projects I have been involved in that can show my skill in these areas.
Types Of Work I Do
In all cases, if I cannot do the job that you are looking for I will tell you this up front. I don't believe in beating around the bush and I don't believe in selling a service that I can't really provide. In other words, I won't be taking the opportunity to learn the skills I need on your dime.
If it's not listed here, ask. I may not have covered everything, but if it has something to do with (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, PHP or MySQL there is a good chance that I can provide it.
Custom Template Construction to Meet Your Specifications
I will take a design or designs and turn them into HTML and CSS Templates, all that I ask is that I receive the original design in PhotoShop format with all the original layers. This is an area where I have honed my skills over many years of practice. The templates are efficient and light weight using CSS for layout and only using tables when necessary. Generally a table must be used if the site will be edited with application such as Adobe's Contribute or something similar. (I don't like using tables but until the tools used for editing can handle advanced CSS techniques we are all stuck with them.) These templates are created in DreamWeaver and can be DreamWeaver Templates or simple HTML Templates. DreamWeaver Templates allow for more control and the ability to create nested templates so that nothing ever needs to be edited twice. If the templates are designed for a site destined for PHP scripting (or even ASP, ColdFusion, etc...), the use of includes for common areas of the site is possible allowing for these areas to be dynamically generated off page. Templates will take into account the site architecture (linking structure) if provided, Drop-Down/Fly-Out menus are possible.
Database Design
On a database driven site the database is the foundation. Without a strong foundation a house cannot stand. Provided with the details of the data to be stored I will design a database and create the SQL to set up a MySQL Database. Maybe you are a developer but database design and normalization are not something you are strong at. Not a problem, I will do that work for you and give you the proper base to form the foundation you need. Tables, Columns, Keys and Indexes all named in a standard, descriptive fashion so that it is easy to see what's what. I will also include a diagram of the database that shows the relationships between the tables. I can also work with you to design the queries that will insert and retrieve the data if needed.
PHP/JavaScript/AJAX Programming
The possibilities here are far too many to mention. I can build small tools that are easy to install and use all the way up to complete custom web application. I believe that code should be easy to follow, meticulously clean and well organized with extensive internal documentation/comments. Tell me what you're looking for. If you have a detailed project specification or outline that would be great. If not we can create one together.
